Getting Started…

I create this website to share some of the knowledge I've gathered over my years of being an athlete, personal trainer and guy who loves to compete! You'll find workout videos, pictures, workout routines, some of the things I like and a bunch of other stuff.
I'd love to hear back from you about what you're doing, and how this site is able to help you achieve your goals.

It’s one of the toughest things to do when it comes to getting involved with a workout program. The mental anguish we put ourselves through is draining. Making sure the kids are taken care of for this workout hour, getting dressed to workout and driving to the gym can be so overwhelming sometimes that we never get to the first step! I want to let you know that YOU’RE NOT ALONE! In my years of being personal trainer and as a guy who has trained off and on over the past 20 years, the first step is the toughest step. We talk ourselves out of getting started, we convince ourselves that we’ll start tomorrow and that we will have this one last crappy meal before we start our “clean diet”. These are all typical things that most people do before actually committing to getting started. See, it’s not getting started with a workout program, it’s actually getting started on a LIFESTYLE CHANGE! As logical people, I think we know that and that’s what makes it so hard….CHANGE. We all love change, right? Yeah, not so much. Typically we think that change will cramp our style or take us away from the things we like to do. The funny thing is that making the change to a healthier lifestyle “doesn’t sound fun”, but in reality, once we’ve begun the process and have seen and felt the results of having made that change, we think to ourselves, “what the hell was I waiting for in the first place, I love this”! Those are some of the thoughts that have run through my mind over the years…what about you? What are some of your thoughts on making this lifestyle change? Write them down so you don’t forget the good and the bad reasons.
Here’s an example of a person’ first week of getting started…
DAY 1 - can have you second guessing yourself…what am I doing here? I’m sooooo out of shape and I wanna leave. I’m too old. I’m not athletic enough. Yada Yada Yada.
DAY 2 - If you can drag yourself back to the gym, the second day is a little better because you’ve been to the gym ONCE and now you feel like you’re a little more familiar with your surroundings and maybe the second day won’t be so hard. You just want to be in shape without having to do the work, but you get through!
DAY 3 - You’re sore as hell and want the soreness to go away. Every time you get up from sitting down you feel every bone, muscle and tendon in your body! You’re thinking, I didn’t know my body could get this sore. You make it to the gym and once you warm up and get your blood pumping, to your surprise you don’t feel quite so bad anymore. You feel yourself getting into a bit of a rhythm and begin to feel more comfortable overall…still just a bit sore.
DAY 4 – You’re feeling a little cocky and think you know more than you actually do. This is good though because your mind is starting to work for you, not against you. Doing the exercises isn’t such a chore. You’re starting to really push and give really good effort and can feel your muscles working.
You take a day off and then comes weekend. You rest and recuperate and are now waiting to get started on your second week!
In my experience, and I’m sure that most of you have had this same experience, but once you get started at something that is intimidating or scary, its typically never as bad as you thought it would be.
Now Let’s get started!
